The MAXITORQ® Mechanical Multiple Disc clutches and brakes provide 3 to 6 times the torque produced by single disc clutches and brakes of the same package size, making them the ideal solution for high torque, limited space requirements. The clutch disc feature a bronze or steel friction surface for added life, superior consistency for indexing and excellent torque transmitting characteristics. The unit is completely assembled and shipped ready to be slipped onto a shaft.

Separator springs are used between each pair of inner discs. These separator springs provide the advantage of truly floating discs, which ensures that there is negligible drag, no abrasion and consequently no heat generated when the clutch is in neutral. A locking plate on the disc end of each unit locks all discs against compression  by the lever system. Manual adjustment is made by temporarily loosening the lock screw on the split type adjusting ring then turning the ring to give the desired shifting pressure. Only an hex key wrench is required for this adjustment.

The MAXITORQ® Overload Release clutch is comprised of or standard mechanical multiple disc clutch with overload release features. The overload release occurs as a result of cams placed on the shifter sleeve and drive cup. When an overload occurs the discs slip, causing the cams to come into contact. The shifter or sleeve is then forced into a neutral position.

The MAXITORQ® Overload Release clutch is designed to protect a machine and its products against damage resulting from accidental overloading of the mechanism. The overload clutch mates with a cammed drive cup, and hub adapters are available if designed for a particular application. The cammed driving cup connects the overload release clutch with either the driven or driving device.

Special overload release shifters are available for clutch sizes 20 – 26. Shoes and studs are available for all sizes including 27 and 28 for riveting into shifter yokes designed by the customer.
A limit switch can be incorporated into the power input line. The clutches may be used on a continuous shaft, or as a cut-off coupling type for connecting two shafts.

MAXITORQ® torque limiters provides protection against overloads while sustaining torque so that shutdown and restart is not required. Acting like a torsion shock absorber to permit “slip” if the torque exceeds an adjustable pre-set level, these units are used in any application where obstructions can cause overloads or where production is sensitive to over tensioning.

Depending on  size, the torque limiters are adjustable over a wide torque range from 1lb.ft. to 2000 lb. ft. Small space-saver sizes from 2 3/16" to 8 5/8" O.D., and high torque potential make them the best possible choice for machine tools, conveyor systems, off-highway mobile equipment or any other application where obstructions can cause temporary overloads or where over- tensioning is a problem, as in textile or paper mills. Torque limiters can be pre-set to transmit torque constantly regardless of the speed of the drive mechanism. When a jam occurs, the torque limiter will slip but the torque level is accurately sustained.

The MAXITORQ® Disc Pacs can be used with air, hydraulic, electric or manually operated brakes and clutches. The Disc Pac keys to a shaft and is available in eight sizes from 2" to 8" diameter with over 100 variations. The static torque averages from 4 lb. ft. to 2000 lb. ft.  All assembly, disassembly  and adjustments are manual. No special tools are required. Standard ring cups and flange driving cups are available if desired. The Disc Pac can be used as a multiple disc clutch or brake, an overload release clutch or a torque-limiting device.

MAXITORQ® Model MTL TORQ-LOK® is a patented, one way, bi-directional clutch. The clutch permits the transmission of torque from the input shaft to the output shaft in either direction. The clutch does not allow the output shaft to backdrive the input shaft.

For multiple functional requirements, the Model MTL® can be readily integrated with other Carlyle Johnson clutches, brakes or torque limiters. This gives the engineer a tool to combine components for a lighter, more streamlined design.

For example, by incorporating an MTL Torq-Lok® with a Carlyle Johnson spring applied clutch we can offer braking, torque limiting and manual driving with no back drive.

Shifter Shoes and Studs

Should you choose to fabricate your own shifting mechanism, a pair of  our shifter shoes be included in the design. They should be attached directly opposite each other and allowed to float
in the groove of the clutch shifting sleeve. Our shifter shoes are fabricated from a slow-wearing material which is adaptable to any speed suitable to your clutch operation.

Flange Type Drive Cup

Carlyle Johnson Maxitorq® internal flange type driving cups are designed to provide an
economical means of adapting the clutch or brake to various types of driven or driving
members with a pulley, fly wheel, sprocket, gear, or sheave by means of flathead screws. Cups
are hardened for long life and durability. The internal flange drive cup has a smaller outside
diameter and a lower inertia, then the ring type driving cup.
Available in special materials and surface finishes, and with custom modifications.

Ring Type Driving Cup

Carlyle Johnson Maxitorq® ring type driving cups are designed to provide an economical means of adapting the clutch or brake to various types of driven or driving members. Cups are made to precise specifications and hardened for long life and durability
The ring type driving cups enclose the multiple discs, helping to prevent entry of dust, dirt or other harmful materials getting into the mechanism as well as presenting a neat, compact appearance. They are made to permit piloting on the inside or outside diameter with a pulley, fly wheel, sprocket, gear, or sheave by means of a cap screw. They also offer the advantage of installation without change of present bearing design.
Available in special materials, surface finishes, and with custom modifications.
